title pic USA CRITS Announces First 5 Events of 2012, Overall Prize List

Athens, GA - Early season criterium racing in warm climates sets the stage for the 2012 USA CRITS Championship Series. Starting in South Florida’s Delray Beach Pineapple Grove business district, the Series travels to Tucson, AZ, Charlotte, NC, and Athens, GA, before hitting St. Louis, MO for the mid-point of the Series. The Series is defining the standard for American criterium racing, with five great events getting the year rolling for both the men and the women. The final USA CRITS Championship Series schedule will be released by December 31 and will include ten events.

Two items new to USA CRITS in 2012 are USA CRITS TEAM races and an overall prize purse for the men’s standings.

title pic Dates Set For Speed Week 2012

Swagger LLC is proud to announce that USA CRITS Speed Week will return to the streets of Georgia and South Carolina April 28 through May 6, 2012!

Once again, the Terrapin Twilight Criterium in downtown Athens, GA kicks off the weeklong series of seven races in nine days. Also returning to the series are the annual events in Roswell and Sandy Springs in Georgia, as well as Beaufort, Walterboro, and Spartanburg in South Carolina. A yet-to-be-announced event, which will be new to the series, will take place on Saturday, May 5.

After 60 minutes of highly-animated racing, Jelly Belly presented by Kenda’s lone Ken Hanson took the final bunch sprint to win the USA CRITS Finals at the TD Bank Mayor’s Cup in Boston, MA. Luke Keough (Team Mountain Khakis presented by SmartStop) finished an impressive third in the Finals to secure his USA CRITS overall lead. Christian Helmig (ELBOWZ Racing) maintained his lead in the SportsBaseOnline Lap Leader competition, while Keough wrapped up an impressive year by pulling on the Maxxis Best Young Rider jersey one last time.

From the very start of the race, it was USA CRITS Championship Series contenders that would take responsibility early and animate the racing, with Helmig, Clayton Barrows (Stan’s NoTubes/AXA Equitable), and Clay Murfet (RideClean p/b PatentIt.com) each taking pulls at the front of the field.

title pic Allar Claims Second Consecutive USA CRITS Title

Erica Allar (RideClean p/b PatentIt.com – 1352 points) finished on the podium in five of the six USA CRITS women’s events this year to capture her second consecutive series championship. With a 32nd place finish being the lone anomaly on her resume this year, Allar won the Iron Hill Twilight Criterium, carded runner-up finishes in Athens and Grafton, and took third place in Charlotte and Binghamton to secure ownership of the orange overall leader’s jersey presented by Championship System.

Kacey Manderfield (Pure Energy Cycling Team ProAirHFA – 1262 points) bested her third place finish in the 2010 overall by moving up to the runner-up spot for 2011 thanks to five top 10 finishes, including a second place performance in West Chester. In a testament to her continuing legacy, 2009 women’s champion Laura Van Gilder (Mellow Mushroom – 1178 points) finished third in the overall depsite not racing the Iron Hill Twilight Criterium. Van Gilder won the Giro d’Grafton and placed no worse than seventh in any of the other four events in which she raced.

Jake Keough (UnitedHealthCare Pro Cycling presented by Maxxis) and Laura Van Gilder (Mellow Mushroom) captured the individual titles for Speed Week 2011, while UnitedHealthCare Pro Cycling presented by Maxxis and Colavita/Forno d’Asolo p/b Cooking Light claimed the men’s and women’s team titles, respectively.
