USA CRITS Finals Moves to Boston

USA CRITS Finals Now To Be Held In Boston On Sunday, Sept. 25
Mayor Menino Agrees To Host The World-Class Race As Part Of The TD Bank Cycling Celebration

Athens, GA — With the cancellation of the Capital Criterium presented by Events DC announced late last week, the USA CRITS Championship Series and the Capital Criterium have diligently worked with the organizers of the TD Bank Mayor’s Cup to name Boston as the venue for the USA CRITS Finals in 2011. The TD Bank Mayor’s Cup is scheduled for Sunday, September 25.

“We are extremely grateful to Boston Mayor Thomas Menino for agreeing to help us and we have been working with the event in Boston to be added to the USA CRITS Series for 2012,” says USA CRITS director Gene Dixon. “It was a logical step to make the TD Bank Mayor’s Cup the Finals for 2011 with the cancellation of the DC event. After contacting all riders in contention for the overall, and with the assistance of the DC organizers, we have been able to cement the participation of these riders in Boston.”

The last minute change-up to the schedule has presented difficulties for team travel plans, but with the help of both Capital Criterium and TD Bank Mayor’s Cup organizers, six of the top ten in the men’s Series will be on-hand in Boston. Top USA CRITS riders that will be racing include overall leader Luke Keough (Team Mountain Khakis p/b SmartStop), 2nd place Stan’s NoTubes/AXA Equitable rider Clayton Barrows (who starts a research fellowship in Albuquerque, New Mexico next week for his Ph.D. work), and SportsBaseOnline Lap Leader presented by VeloNews Christian Helmig (ELBOWZ Racing).

Those unable to attend include: 5th place Euris Vidal (CRCA/Foundation), who is already scheduled to be racing in Trindad, 7th place Jonathan Cantwell (V Australia), who is back in Australia, 8th place Joseph Schmalz (ELBOWZ Racing), who will be racing the first race of the US Gran Prix of Cyclocross, and 10th place Jake Keough (UnitedHealthcare p/b Maxxis), who is ineligible to race in Boston as he is on a Pro Continental Team.

USA CRITS will also edit its points structure for the Finals and will not award start points since several of the top 10 could in no way make it to Boston.

After talking with women’s overall leader, Erica Allar (RideClean p/b PatentIt.com), USA CRITS decided to make the results after the Chris Thater Memorial final, as Allar will be in Los Angeles racing in Track Nationals and cannot make it to Boston in time to race.

In its third year, the TD Bank Mayor’s Cup is organized and managed by Boston Bikes and the City of Boston. The event will bring more than 200 top professional racers, including Olympians and national champions, to the heart of downtown Boston to compete for $40,000 in prize money ($15,000 plus $5,000 cash primes in both the men’s and women’s race).
