TEAM HISTORY/MISSION: What began as a small women’s cycling club in 2006 in Kansas City has grown to a Denver-based organization which includes a 14-woman pro/1/2 squad, a CAT 3 team and a large developmental CAT 4 team, as well as a multi-state co-ed.
“When I began this journey 5 years ago, I wanted to give women a place to ask any questions they had, to be able to bounce ideas and issues off more experienced racers, and to help grow the sport of women’s cycling by continually bringing new riders into the sport,” says team director and racer Megan Hottman, who founded the team in 2006. “Now –we’ve got a huge race team, a huge club, fantastic and dedicated sponsors. Almost our entire 2009 squad returns for 2010, plus we’ve added veteran rider Liza Rachetto, ‘09 masters Time trial champion Sydney Brown, and an experienced east coast crit racer, Kat Carr. Additionally, some of the women that originally joined our SW4 and SW3 teams have now upgraded to CAT 2 and we’re looking forward to exposing them to NRC racing and racing abroad in Europe.”
“The unique thing about our team,” says Hottman, “is that we all have full time jobs, many of us are married, several have kids . . . The team’s focus really is on balance, and on making racing a positive addition to our busy lives. For many of us, race weekends and stage racing are our ‘vacations,’ so they have to be fun for us.” Operating under this premise, the team saw some great results in 2009, including top-15 GC placings at Gila and Cascade, multiple Colorado state championships (including the p/1/2 crit championship!), and a masters track national championship.
